Mixing vs mastering, explained
Mixing works on the parts. It sets how loud each vocal and instrument is, where it sits, and how it sounds: EQ, compression, tuning, reverb and delay. The result is one stereo file where every part fits together.
Mastering works on that one stereo file. It is the last step before release: final EQ, dynamics and loudness, so the song holds up next to other records on streaming services, phones and car speakers. Mastering cannot fix a mix that is out of balance, which is why the mix comes first.
Static City Studios is based in Apollo Beach, in south Tampa Bay, and works online, so artists anywhere can send files.
Mixing and mastering services FAQ
What is the difference between mixing and mastering?
Mixing balances and shapes every part of the song into one stereo file. Mastering prepares that finished stereo file for release. Mixing comes first.
I only have my vocals and a 2-track beat. Which service do I need?
Vocal Mixing. It is built for vocals over one stereo beat, and it is booking now at $230 a song during the trial.
What are stems, and do I need them?
Stems are the beat's separate parts (drums, 808, melody and so on) exported as their own files. You need them only if you want the whole song rebalanced, which is the Mixing service. Vocal Mixing works with one stereo beat.
Do I have to be in Tampa to work with Static City Studios?
No. Static City Studios is based in Apollo Beach, Florida, and mixing is done online, so artists anywhere can send files.
How much does mixing and mastering cost?
Vocal mixing is $230 a song during the trial, for the first 3 songs. Full mixing, mastering and mix and master are quoted per song after we hear what you have.
